WORLD POKER TOUR

World Poker Tour or WPT is a series of 13 poker tournaments televised weekly worldwide. It is a collection of Texas Hold’em poker tournaments that are organized at the international level. Attorney or television producer Stephen Lipscomb, also the CEO of WPT Enterprises (WPTE) initiated it in 2003. WPTE is also the firm that manages World Poker Tour. At present, it airs on Travel Channel and mostly features world's professional players and real casino events. It has a major role to help poker and its players to achieve a wide audience.

The tour climaxed with WPT Championship in April 2003 at Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas at Nevada. Its first season was aired on Travel Channel on the American cable television in 2003. On February 1, 2004, the show had its network debut on NBC. They had a special “Battle Of Champions” tournament.

WPT may be considered being pretty new to the world of poker but it has surely become very popular and has acquired a household name. When aired for the first time in 2003, it had an audience share of 900,000. An estimate says to have about 1.1 viewers at the time of first World Poker Tour Championship.

The popularity of WPT grows on and proves that poker is a spectator sport. It lasts a great impact on the entertainment industry also. The main sponsors of the tour are online poker websites and casinos. The show is co-hosted by Mike Sexton, the World Series of Poker winner and Vince Van Patten, actor.

To talk about the World Poker Tour tournaments in general, first represented by World Series of Poker’s main event, the poker tournament gives each player an equal amount of chips to begin with. Its colors represent its different values. The game continues for more than several days till one player gets all the chips.

As that happens, player wins the game and gets the grand prize, of about 30-35% of total prize pool. The winner's check can even go more than one million dollars. All the competitors end with no chips at hand. They win a part of the prize pool as per the order in which they leave the tournament. The last player to lose all chip stack finishes at 2nd position, distinctively for 20% of total prize pool.

In 2004, the World Poker Tour created a Walk of Fame, inducting poker legends Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen and actor James Garner.

The fourth season of broadcast still remains the highest rated television program on cable. It airs each Wednesday on the Travel Channel. The first three seasons of WPT can be seen on the NTSC DVD.
